Climate change has a significant impact on agriculture worldwide, requiring urgent adaptation of farming practices through the transition to sustainable and climate-smart agriculture. This presents serious challenges for both agricultural producers and educational institutions, which must prepare specialists with up-to-date knowledge and skills for sustainable management of agricultural resources.

The specific needs and possible solutions were discussed during the working meeting titled “Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture: Challenges, Opportunities and Resilience”, which was held on 27 March 2026 at Varna University of Management (VUM).

The meeting provided a platform for dialogue among the academic community, experts, institutions, and stakeholders from the agricultural sector, focusing on sustainable solutions and the future development of agriculture under climate change. During the event were presented:

  • the main objectives of the SAFER international initiative;
  • results from a survey on climate awareness, educational needs, digital competences, and attitudes toward green technologies in agriculture;
  • good practices from other inter-regional initiatives.

The event was closed with a productive discussion on participants’ proposals exploring opportunities to modernize higher education in sustainable agriculture by integrating topics such as climate resilience, green growth, and digital learning into innovative academic programs.

The event was held within the SAFER project – “Sustainable Agri-Futures: Empowering Climate Resilience and Green Growth in Higher Education”. The initiative brings together universities and partners from Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, working collaboratively to develop interdisciplinary education and international cooperation in response to the challenges of climate change and sustainable agricultural development.
