On February 28, 2025, Varna University of Management (VUM) organized a Martenitsa Workshop, dedicated to one of Bulgaria’s most symbolic traditions – the custom of Baba Marta. The event brought together international and Bulgarian students, who had the opportunity to create their own Martenitsa and learn more about the meaning behind this unique tradition.
A Bulgarian Tradition Shared with the World
The Martenitsa is not just a decorative accessory; it is a symbol of health, happiness, and good fortune. During the workshop, students explored the origins of this tradition and how it is celebrated in different regions of Bulgaria. With the help of their Bulgarian colleagues and professors, international students handcrafted traditional Pizho and Penda, bracelets, and other Martenitsa variations, each carrying a message of new beginnings and positive energy.
Cultural Exchange and New Experiences
For many international students at VUM, this was their first encounter with Bulgarian traditions. The event provided a fantastic opportunity for cultural exchange, fostering appreciation and respect for Bulgarian heritage. Participants not only enjoyed the creative experience but also shared their impressions of the tradition, with some even planning to take Martenitsa back to their families and friends abroad.
VUM remains committed to promoting cultural diversity and enriching student life through events that blend education, traditions, and international dialogue.
