Varna University of Management starts working on the international project `Sustaining BSB Biodiversity through Traditional Knowledge and Innovation BIOSUSTAIN` with the coordination of the Georgian Arts and Culture Centre (Georgia) and in partnerships with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece).

The overall objective of the project BIOSUSTAIN is to activate the preservation and restoration of BSB ecosystems and landscapes by innovatively applying traditional ecological knowledge. This involves mobilization of local communities in protecting local species through targeted awareness-raising, capacity building, developing and promoting TEK-based economically viable models based on BSB’s natural heritage.

BIOSUSTAIN will

  • Conduct pilot studies in the project partner countries
  • Develop innovative methods for using traditional knowledge in various interconnected sectors (traditional crafts, cooking, and medicine)
  • Strengthen the capacities of local populations for effective protection of landscapes and ecosystems.

The initiative pays special attention to raising public awareness about the importance of traditional knowledge and the role of local communities in the process of biodiversity conservation.

It is co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg VI-B NEXT Black Sea Basin 2021–2027 Programme with a total budget of €554.451,52, of which 90% is the European Union’s contribution.
